What's Included in Your Cruise Fare — and What Costs Extra

The sail fare is the number that shows up in every ad and every search result, and it's easy to mistake it for the total cost of the trip. It isn't — it's closer to the deposit. Here's what's actually bundled into that fare, and where the rest of a typical cruise budget goes.

What's included

Your stateroom is covered for the full length of the cruise, along with meals in the main dining room — breakfast, lunch, and dinner — plus the buffet and other casual venues, which are generally available around the clock. Standard entertainment is included too: shows, pools, and most onboard activities. Port taxes and fees are also built into the fare you're quoted, so that part of the math is already done for you.

What's usually extra

Gratuities are the daily service charge, often $16–$23 per guest per day, and they're rarely folded into the headline fare. Wifi and cellular packages are almost always sold separately. Specialty dining — steakhouses, sushi, chef's table experiences — comes at an added cost per person. Shore excursions tend to be the largest variable in most cruise budgets, since pricing swings widely by port and activity. Drink packages, spa treatments, and casino play round out the list, and together they're the easiest costs to underestimate before boarding.
