Packing for a Week at Sea Without Overdoing It

Cruise packing has a reputation for being complicated because of shifting dress codes and unpredictable weather across ports — but a few rules of thumb keep it simple.

Layer for the ship, not the itinerary

Dining rooms and theaters run cold no matter how hot the destination is. Pack one light layer specifically for indoor evenings, separate from anything you're bringing for shore excursions.

One "formal enough" outfit covers most nights

Unless your cruise line strictly enforces black-tie formal nights, a single elevated outfit — a blazer, a versatile dress — usually covers every dining room dress code you'll encounter across a week.

Carry-on the essentials

Checked luggage can take several hours to reach your cabin after boarding. Pack swimwear, a change of clothes, medications, and travel documents in a carry-on so you're not stuck waiting around in travel clothes on embarkation day.

We include a packing list tailored to your specific ship, itinerary, and dress code policy with every trip we plan.
